Cognitive skills intergrate remembereing, problem solving and learning
Assess a toddler’s cognitive skills by looking at:
• How they explore new toys and experiences
o Is she interested in a new toy
o Does she explore the properties of the toy
o Is she able to use it
• How they solve problems
o With two bricks in her hand what does she do when offered a third or fourth brick?
o What does she do if her toy falls under the table?
• Their ability to complete puzzles
o Can she complete a simple puzzle?
• Bricks and drawing
o Can she build a tower?
o Can she scribble when asked to?
The following are expected for the toddler:
Completes a simple puzzle
Scribbles, circular scribbles and may copy a circle, Tower of 2-9 cubes
Has already developed object permanence
Explores properties and possibilities of toys
