Cognitive skills
This is the ability for a child to integrate perception, thinking and learning. It involves remembering, problem solving and decision making
Assess her cognitive skills by looking at:
• Interest in new things
o Present a new toy to the Mary. Is she interested in the toy? Does she try to explore the toy?
• Attention to familiar and unfamiliar objects
o Present a soft toy to the infant. Allow the toy to fall and comment on her ability to follow a falling object. Does she look for the toy when hidden? Has she developed object permanence?
o Present a familiar object to her (say her toy) and comment on her reaction.
o What is her reaction to strangers and unfamiliar objects?
The following are expected for an infant:
Object permanence- 7-9months
Find a toy hidden away by 12 months
By 12 weeks of age, the young infant will react to familiar situations by smiling, or cooing
