Introduce yourself to Jodie and her mother and state the aim of your assessment. I suggest you start your assessment by assessing the Jodies’ expressive language. Make sure that her hearing is normal either by testing or by asking Martha if she has any concerns with Jodies’ hearing.

Try to engage Jodie in a simple conversation. Children like to talk about their toys, animals, food or an intresting object on the table. Observe for any sounds, words, phrases or sentences. Be opportunistic and work with her around what she is interested in.

Assess her concentration and attention. You can do this by testing her interest and concentration on some interesting pictures in a book.  Also comment on whether she is sitting attentively and listening to you or changing from one activity to the other. You could also get this information from her mother.

Check her understanding using object recognition(is she able to recognise some common objects like cup, spoon?), picture recognition(can she point to the right object when asked to?), ability to carry out instructions( for example give me the pen? )

Get information from her mother on the size of her vocabulary.

Summarise your findings and present them to the examiner. State whether Jodies’ development is appropriate for her age, delayed or advanced. Give a plan of management.

The following are expected for a 1 year old child

i.    Expressive language:  They can imitate adult sounds

ii.    Concentration/attention : 1 year old children can concentrates to purposeful activities

iii.    Understanding: children recognise their name by 8 months. At 1 year they  may be able to name some common objects and may also be able to follow instructions with one information carrying word.

iv.    Vocabulary: They may have a vocabulary of about 5 words

In this case Jodies’ development was normal. You reassured her mother and proposed routine follow up with her General practitioner.
