1) Familial or delayed motor maturation
a. There is usually a family history of fine motor delay. There is no other associated delay. The children eventually gain appropriate skills


2) Developmental Dyspraxia


3) As part of global developmental delay
a. Associated fine motor delay or speech and language delay or delay in social and interaction skills.


4) Environmental
a. Social deprivation
b. Prolonged hospitalisation and periods of being unwell


5) Deficit in attention motor coordination and perception (DAMP )

6) Motor skills disorder

7) Associated with autistic spectrum disorder especially Aspergers syndrome

8) Associated with language problems such as stuttering

9) Comorbid conditions- high levels of lead, anaemia,  prematurity

10) Exposure to drugs in utero

11) Progressive metabolic disorder
