1) Familial or delayed motor maturation
a. There is usually a family history of gross motor delay. There is no other associated delay. The children eventually gain appropriate skills
2) As part of global developmental delay
a. Associated fine motor delay or speech and language delay or delay in social and interaction skills.
3) Neuromuscular disorder
a. Muscular dystrophy- Duchens Muscular, Beckers muscular dystrophy
b. Causes of hypotonia- Prader-Willi syndrome, Down’s syndrome, undiagnosed causes
4) Environmental
a. Social deprivation
b. Prolonged hospitalisation and periods of being unwell
5) Progressive metabolic disorder
6) Visual impairment
7) Rickets
8) Spina bifida
9) Undiagnosed/ Unknown
