Assessment of gross motor development » Essays
Mary is now 13 months old. She has come to see you because her mother has concerns regarding her gross motor development. She was born at term with no antenatal or neonatal problems. At the age of about 9 months she had a moderate head injury requiring hospital admission. Please assess her gross motor skills. Attempt this task before looking at the answer.

 Children aged between 7 and 18 months are very active and have varied skills. Remember that gross motor skills like any other skills progress from simple to more complex movements. Do not assess a child's ability to stand if they cannot sit.

Introduce yourself to Mary and her mother and gain their consent. Have in mind a variety of test that will help you reach your goal. If the she does not want to do a certain test, move on. 

Comment on things that  Mary does  spontaneously which aid your assessment. Take advantage of these and start your assessment with that aspect of gross motor development.  

Gross motor development from 7months- 18 months
Observe the child in the supine position, pull-to-sit and sitting position, standing, ventral suspension and in the prone position. At every level comment on  gross movements, active and passive posture.


 

Gross Motor skills from 7 -18 months

7months  

-Sit without support
-Sits with a straight back
-Bears some weight on feet when held standing
 

8months 

-Gets into crawling position

-Takes full  weight on feet when standing

9months 

-Gets into sitting position
-stands holding on furniture
-crawls

10 months

-pulls to stand
-walks with hand held

1 year

Stands alone
-Cruises
-May walk
-Some babies may bottom shuffle

15months

-Stands without support
- Walks without help with a broad based gait
-Creeps upstairs

18month

-Walks upstairs holding on
-Runs
-Jumps
-Sits self on a chair
-Pull toys as they walk
-throws a ball
