Obstetric units without bloodbanks in UK

Obstetric units without bloodbanks in UK Posted by R v P.
Hi Paul, To answer your question

should there be an obstetric unit in a hospital without a blood bank ??

Try Liverpool Womens Hospital. The largest maternity unit in Europe with close to 10000 deliveries per year. They dont have a blood bank and have to /taxi/blue light to Royal Liverpool hospital for blood. I think there are few other large \"womens\" hospitals without inhouse bloodbanks as well. This was highlited in the TOG article on care bundle for placenta accreta.

oh,that\'s big surprise!!!
even most of the DGH have onsite blood bank........but if the total time for transport is not changed whether you get it from own hospital or a hospital 10-15 minutes away.......in practical terms shouldn\'t make a difference
